ini membership fees for contract interpreters
If you are an interpreter who receives assignments immediately, without participating in placements or tests at international organisations, the following ini membership scheme applies:
1) financing ini
ini is a non-profit organisation, but it has to cover its costs, as it does not receive any funding from organisations. ini helps translators, editors and interpreters to improve their professional qualification and to get in touch with international organisations. ini searches, certifies, advises, trains, promotes and supervises candidates.
From these tasks quite considerable costs arise. ini also strives for high levels of efficiency in its dealings with members. Therefore, the number of members must remain relatively low. To finance its work, ini is dependant on membership fees.
2) fees only in case of paid assignments:
50 Euros or 150 Euros per month
The process of becoming an ini member itself is free of charge. ini membership fees have only to be paid from the moment when there is a paid
ini assignment.
From this moment, ini will help the candidate to prepare for the assignment. ini can also help to find a cheap flight and an economic accomodation near the location where the assignment takes
place. During the assignment, ini members stay in touch with an ini contact person.
For ini members who have been given a paid assignment by an international organisation, there are two different rates, 50 Euros or 150 Euros per month.
a) fee system in case of travel costs paid by the linguist
50 Euros per month have to be paid if a candidate earns by his/her ini assignments up to 1500 Euros in a
month and has to pay travel costs.
150 Euros per month have to be paid if a candidate earns by his/her ini assignments more than 1500 Euros in a month and has to pay travel costs.
Example: If a linguist works for an organisation to which he has applied as ini member and earns 1350 Euros in June, while having to pay
travel, the membership fee for June is 50 Euros.
b) fee system in case of no travel costs
In case that the organisation pays the travel costs or in case that there are no such costs, there is
another rule:
50 Euros per month have to be paid if a candidate earns by his/her ini assignments up to 1000 Euros and does not have to pay travel costs.
150 Euros per month have to be paid if a candidate earns by his/her ini assignments more than 1000 Euros and does not have to pay travel costs.
Example: If, in the example above, travel costs are paid by the organisation, the interpreter who has earned 1350 Euros in June has to pay 150 Euros fees for this month.
3) period of membership
The period of membership depends on the linguists' wage from assignments to which they have applied as ini member:
a) membership of 3 months
If the ini member earns up to 750 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 3 months. So the interpreter will have to pay a fee of 50 Euros for each of these three months.
After this period no fees have to be paid if there are no new assignments. If there are new assignments after this 3-months-period, the period of membership starts anew.
Example: If a linguist receives his first ini assignment in June and earns up to 750 Euros in total by this assignment or other assignments till August, then she has to pay membership fees for June, July and August.
If then there is no ini assignment in September, there will be no fees for September. But if there is again an ini assignment in October which is paid up to 750 Euros, membership fees of 50 Euros have to be paid again for each month (October, November and December).
b) membership of 6 months
If the ini member earns more than 750 Euros, but up to 1500 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 6 months. So the linguist will have to pay a fee of 50 Euros or 150 Euros for each of these six months, depending on the income in the relevant month as has been explained above (see 2 a and b).
After this period no fees have to be paid if there are no new assignments. If there are new assignments after this 6-months-period, the period of membership starts anew.
Example: If a linguist receives his first ini assignment in June and earns up to 1500 Euros in total by this assignment or other assignments till August, then she has to pay membership fees for June, July, August, September, October and November.
The membership fee payable for each month depends on the income in each month: If for example the linguist earns 1100 Euros in June and 400 Euros in September, without having to pay for travel, then he has to pay
150 Euros for June and 50 Euros for each of the following months till November.
If then there is no ini assignment in December, there will be no fees for December. But if there is again an ini assignment in January or within the 3-months-period starting from this assignment and wage in total is up to 750 Euros, membership fees of 50 Euros have to be paid again for each of these thre months (January, February and March). And if within this 3-months-period wage is more than 750 Euros and up to 1500 Euros, membership is from January to June. If wage within this 3-months-period is more than 1500 Euros, but up to 2250 Euros, membership will be for 9 months. If wage within the 3-months-period is more than 2250 Euros, but up to 3000 Euros, membership is for 12 months. If wage within the 3-months-period is more than 3000 Euros, but up to 4500 Euros, membership is for 18 months. And if wage within the 3-months-period is more than 4500 Euros, membership is for 24 months.
c) membership of 9 months
If the ini member earns more than 1500 Euros, but up to 2250 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 9 months. Then the same rules will apply as stated above in 3 a and b.
d) membership of 12 months
If the ini member earns more than 2250 Euros, but up to 3000 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 12 months. Then the same rules will apply as stated above in 3 a and b.
e) membership of 18 months
If the ini member earns more than 3000 Euros, but up to 4500 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 12 months. Then the same rules will apply as stated above in 3 a and b.
f) membership of 24 months
If the ini member earns more than 4500 Euros by ini assignments within a period of 3 months starting with the first assignment, then the period of membership will be 12 months. Then the same rules will apply as stated above in 3 a and b.
