Placements at Organisations

Or: What does it mean to be an interpretation trainee ?

Practice in Silent Booths

Candidates who have been accepted as trainees by an organisation practise in the silent booth of the organisation. A placement usually lasts 2 weeks, but may last up to 4 weeks. Diligent preparation of meetings before and during the placement is required: Candidates have to study diplomatic terminology and they have to improve their background knowledge regarding international organisations.

Unpaid Placements

Placements are unpaid. Travel and acccommodation have to be covered by each trainee.

Advice on Skills and Placement Certificates

So organisations may offer the opportunity to practise in silent booths, without an obligation to provide coaching: Trainees must be able to practise individually and mainly without supervision. However, organisations may advise trainees and hold discussions with them as a practise. Usually every candidate receives a placement certificate from the organisation.

Evaluations ? Maybe !
It cannot be guaranteed that the interpreter's performance is evaluated. However, there may be such an evaluation. If a candidate passes this test, then this freelancer will be included in the roster of the organisation, so that he/she can receive paid interpretation assignments.

Direct Contracts in case of Paid Assignments

Organisations make contracts directly with individual ini
members at standard rates. Contracts are not established
between organisations and the ini secretariat.
